House OKs Drug Testing Welfare Recipients

Huntington Herald-Dispatch – The West Virginia House of Delegates has approved a bill that would establish a three-year pilot program to drug screen and test certain applicants for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, commonly referred to as TANF. Read

The House voted 91-8 Wednesday to approve Senate Bill 6, which would require officials with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources to seek federal approval to drug-screen and test applicants for TANF, which is West Virginia’s public welfare program, if DHHR employees have reasonable suspicion that an applicant is abusing drugs.

The House amended some portions of the bill, so it will return to the Senate for its consideration before it can advance to Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin for his consideration.
