(Charleston, WV) – One of the most complicated pieces of legislation is also one of the most important: the state budget. The state budget directly affects everyone living in West Virginia. A new primer released today from the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, “Your Guide to the State Budget,” offers a step-by-step roadmap on understanding how the state invests its money, how the budget works and how we pay for our priorities.

“The budget is arguably the most important bill passed each year. We hope this guide helps the citizens of West Virginia understand the important investments we make together and how we can work together to improve the budget process and build a stronger economy,” said Ted Boettner, Executive Director of the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy.

“From paying teachers to paving roads, the state’s budget has an impact on all of our lives. Now with this guide, we want to help people understand where the money for the state budget comes from and what it is used for,” stated Sean O’Leary, Senior Fiscal Policy Analyst with the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy.

The West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy has published this guide to give citizens insights on the fiscal decisions that shape their daily lives. Greater understanding and involvement means greater citizen participation in setting our priorities as a state. The guide is aimed at a general audience and would be a good resource for government classes, civic clubs, nonprofit organizations and policymakers.
